What is domain blacklist check?

Domain blacklists — also called Domain-based Blacklists (DBLs), Uniform Resource Identifier Blacklists (URIBLs) or Realtime Blackhole Lists (RBLs) — are databases maintained by anti-spam organisations that list domains associated with spam, phishing or malware. Mailbox providers query these lists when filtering inbound mail, so a listing can cause your emails to be blocked or routed to spam before they reach the inbox.

How it works

03 · Risk

Why it matters

A domain listing on Spamhaus DBL or URIBL Multi can cause your emails to be blocked at the gateway before they ever reach a spam folder. Unlike IP blacklisting — which affects the server — domain blacklisting targets your brand domain and persists regardless of which sending infrastructure you use.

For financial services senders, domain blacklisting carries additional risk. Transactional emails, account alerts and compliance notifications all originate from the same domain. A single listing can block all of them simultaneously, creating a customer-communication gap that regulators and customers will notice.

Common ways to use this tool

• Pre-campaign deliverability check. Run the scan before any bulk send to confirm your domain is clean and your emails will reach the inbox.
• Spam-folder incident triage. When open rates drop or recipients report spam-folder delivery, check the domain for a fresh blacklist listing — it's one of the fastest diagnoses.
• M&A domain due diligence. During acquisition or brand migration, scan all domains being inherited to surface reputation liabilities before they affect your sending.
• New domain warm-up validation. Confirm a newly registered sending domain has no pre-existing listings before beginning a warm-up sequence.

05 · Interpretation

What to check in the result

• Any listing on Spamhaus DBL. Spamhaus DBL is the most widely consulted domain blacklist. A listing here typically causes immediate blocking at major mailbox providers. Submit a removal request at spamhaus.org after identifying and resolving the root cause.
• Listings on URIBL Multi or other URI blacklists. These URI-based blacklists are embedded in many spam filters and gateway appliances. A listing usually indicates your domain appeared in spam campaigns — review recent sends for compromised content or hijacked links.
• Multiple listings simultaneously. Being listed on several blacklists at once suggests a systemic issue — a security breach, compromised account, or spam complaint spike — rather than a data-quality error. Investigate sending logs and authentication records immediately.
• Check errors on full scan. Errors usually mean a blacklist zone was temporarily unreachable during the scan. Re-run the check; persistent errors on the same blacklist may indicate the zone is inactive and can be disregarded.
• Clean result but still hitting spam folders. Domain blacklists are one signal among many. If the check is clean but delivery is poor, audit IP reputation, SPF/DKIM/DMARC alignment and complaint rates — these are likely root causes.
