Over the years, we have developed a set of processes that help us determine the existence of an email address. Email address validation

Spamtraps (aka honeypots) are emails that are created solely to lure spammers in. In email marketing terms, it’s a bait that you may fall victim to if you are collecting email addresses from sources and emailing without their permission. We have a large database of these spam-trap email addresses which help us derive spam-trap indicators that we use to validate your mailing list against. If we detect any of your email addresses matching our indicators, we will automatically mark that email address helping you to stay far from these traps. When you end up sending an email to one of these email addresses, your IP is recorded and you will be blocked from sending any further emails to that ISP, or quite simply, they will place all emails coming from you in the spam folder (away from user’s inbox).

Complainer’s email address quite literally means email addresses that have been known to complaining in the past in regards to receiving bulk emails from people. These are people who have exclusively listed their email addresses to opt-out of any unsolicited bulk emails. These users are recorded as being generally reluctant to receive any advertising or promotional material. We have a large number of sources where we obtain this information from and therefore help you in achieving lower spam complaints. These users don’t want to receive any sort of bulk emails and therefore it’s best not to send them any. By avoiding sending emails to these users would mean better deliverability rates for your email campaigns.

We run several checks against each email address you provide to us. These include domain validation, risk validator, syntax verifier, mta validation, unbalanced delimiter check, and mailbox error check. Domain validation tries to eliminate email addresses that are associated with dead domains (AKA non-existent domains). This removes a majority of email addresses, which have never been registered or have been registered before but now in an expired state. Risk validator measures the risk associated with particular keywords and domains. Think of it as a scale whereby our system tries to measure the possibilities of it being non-existent against it being existent. Syntax verifier is a module within the validation process that enables email addresses without proper syntax to be automatically removed. In general, all email addresses have a standard that they must adhere to. Failure to adhere is likely to causes errors and therefore likely to be non-existent. MTA stands for Mail Transfer Agent or Mail Relay. It’s software that transfers emails from one computer to another. If there is no MTA available or no response from one, likely, no email addresses passing through it would work. An unbalanced delimiter check relies on a similar principle as that of a syntax check but is more complicated in design. In simple terms, it tries to find any ‘outliers’ in the way email address looks and marks it with appropriate status. Mailbox error check is when sets of messages are exchanged between our verification programs to that of the email service provider causing errors while intending to transfer mail. This is also another sign of the email address being invalid.

We offer a couple of options for our users to customize their email validation job. Not just do they include the option to validate against our spam-trap indicators and complainers but they also can utilize suppressed emails, deduplication, custom TLDs, and EV score processing features.
